So ever since hearing about the wonders of overnight oats from my sister, I have been a big fan!
And I was wondering if you can get the same awesome results using steel cut oats! And the internet told me that yes, indeed! Steel cut overnight oats is a definite thing!
So I made a batch! And it was a surprise! A good surprise but a surprise nonetheless!
You see the thing is steel cut overnight oats is a lot more like a very crunchy cereal than oats.
When you use regular rolled oats in overnight oats, and the result is different to the cooked version, it is still recognizably oats. Whereas steel cut overnight oats results in something that is markedly different from cooked steel cut oats. But still delicious!
And of course you have all those healthy benefits of steel cut oats. Plenty of fiber, protein and vitamins!
I wanted to make a version that was more interesting than regular overnight steel cut oats, and I decided on chocolate! This recipe could not be simpler, with just 4 easy ingredients! Throw it in a jar, mix it in, leave it overnight and bingo bango there you have it. A delicious healthy breakfast.
You don’t even need to eat it at home, it’s the easiest portable breakfast in the world!
The only slightly tricky thing with this (and really ‘tricky’ is a way overstatement of a word) is mixing in the cocoa powder. Cocoa powder can be a bit stubborn and not like to blend with other things!
What I did was use a hand whisk, directly in the jar. But of course your jar then needs to be wide enough for the hand whisk to fit in. If it’s not, then mix the cocoa powder and almond milk separately in a bowl big enough to accommodate your hand whisk and then add the chocolate milk to the jar with the oats and the maple syrup.
A quick whisking with a hand whisk gets that cocoa mixed in pronto.
Serve with fresh fruit and some dark chocolate if you’re feeling a bit more decadent.
