Well hello there! Hope you had a lovely November and Thanksgiving and start of the holiday season!
We have been loving life as the weather gets warm here in South Africa. Right now as I write this it’s a lovely 75°F (24°C) and I’ve got the screen door open letting a lovely breeze blow in.
We’ve been out riding our bikes and stand up paddleboarding almost every day! We’re new to paddleboaring, but Jaye has been on boards all his life, surfing and skateboarding, whereas me, not so much!
So it’s been more of a learning curve for me, even though I was always telling myself, what’s the worst that can happen? You fall off! So what? Nonetheless for weeks I was terrified, all shaking legs and trembly knees!
And it’s only now that those words ring true, now that the water isn’t arctic temperatures! In fact on our first foray on these boards, I fell off within the first five minutes and the water was so cold my feet went into cramp instantly! So it wasn’t massively encouraging! Thankfully, the water is heaps warmer now, so we’re going to get into doing some more complicated stuff where we are quite likely to fall off, but it won’t matter!
Also the nature aspect of where we live is just wonderful. On our bike ride this morning we stopped to admire a deer as it ate grass and wagged its gorgeous little tail and helped a tortoise cross the road (well we waited for him to cross the road just in case he might need our help stopping any cars that came by), and the other day we saw two ostriches! It seems there is a wildlife reserve right next door to us, which is why we’re seeing such lovely creatures when we ride.
And when we paddle we share the water with so many gorgeous ducks.
I’m very much looking forward to Christmas because my mom is coming to stay and things are going to get very festive around these parts!
So let’s take a look at what we did in November! Lots of awesome recipes! Lots of pumpkin!
1. How to make cashew butter // 2. Vegan Pumpkin Cupcakes // 3. Vegan Pumpkin Soup // 4. Vegan Pumpkin Muffins // 5. Vegan Pumpkin Fudge // 6. Vegan Pad Thai // 7. Vegan Nutella // 8. Vegan Coffee Cake //
We put up a bunch of new videos in November, starting with a video for ‘How To Make Vegan Buttermilk‘. We also made videos for these recipes below, so click any of the pics below to take you to that recipe where there is now a video, right above the recipe card.
Lots of cookie options there for Christmas!
COMING UP IN DECEMBER
In December I’m striving to include some tasty treats for Christmas, like cakes and other desserts and this weekend I’m testing a vegetable pie (no idea if I’ll get it right, but if I do….)
But most definitely coming up is this awesome gingerbread cake, and this super easy microwave fudge!
WHAT WE’RE READING
I am on the last few chapters (I’m drawing it out) of my Ken Follett book ‘A Column Of Fire’. It definitely did not disappoint! I have loved every page. And as much as I want to know what happens, I also don’t want to end this awesome reading adventure!
I have a degree in history, I mostly studied African history and loved every minute of it, but every time I read one of Ken’s novels (this one is based in 16th century Europe during the religious wars) I wish that I could learn all history this way. Talk about getting a real feel for the time, through the words of a great writer! In University we used to struggle through some very dry academic writings at times!
Anyway I highly recommend all Ken Follett’s books. This one is the third in a series that started with ‘Pillars Of The Earth’ then continued with ‘World Without End’ and now ‘A Column Of Fire’. Each book covers a different time period.
His war trilogy is equally amazing and starts with the first world war, called ‘Fall of Giants’ then continues with ‘Winter of the World’ focused on the second world war and then ‘Edge of Eternity’ covering the cold war and Vietman. I actually can’t recommend ENOUGH that any reader delve into these books. Not only will you get a heck of a history lesson but you’ll do it through the most fascinating characters and fiction that you can dream of.
So you get why I’m sad to finish this one, I’ll have to wait for his next one, and considering how good they are it’s no wonder they take a few years! Any book recommendations, send them my way!
WHAT WE’RE WATCHING
I was very sad to reach the end of ‘Offspring’ the Australian TV show I was watching on Netflix. I think they’re coming back with a season 8 next year, but in the meantime I miss them! I really loved that show!
We started ‘Alias Grace’ on Netflix, it’s quite compelling but I’m not 100% sold on it so far.
‘Mindhunter’ was great, we watched the first season on Netflix and it was awesome, it’s based on how the FBI back in the 70’s started studying and profiling serial killers. It’s strange to realize that the term ‘serial killer’ did not even exist before then.
The latest season of ‘Shameless’ is back on and this is THE favorite show in this house! We LOOOVVVE IT.
FRANKIE AND ERNIE
You know, I thought the cats were settled in properly but each day I realize that they are more back to normal than the day before. We always joked that Ernie must take some love drugs at night because he always comes into the room at 3am or so and loves the heck out of you! He purrs and flops from side to side purring so loud it’s like an engine started up next to you, and if I’m lying on my side he comes and props himself on my hip it’s the cutest thing. Anyway he hadn’t been doing that for a while! He was all off on his own mission elsewhere in the house at night, but he’s back to his old ways now thankfully!
And like I mentioned above, this place is practically like a nature reserve with how much wildlife there is wandering around just in general, there are heaps of ducks and seagulls and many many birds cruising about so the entertainment value for 2 little kitties is large!
These little fellas come and sit on our gate every day and cause much excitement, Ernie begins his special bird calling language (dying to get it on video, but the moment I put the camera on, its like he knows! And he stops!). And Frankie gets into stalking mode and leopard crawls over to the window.
And here they are, Frankie and Ernie in November.
So that’s all from me folks, hope you have a wonderful holiday season! Enjoy all the parties and festivities and make it a December to remember!
With much love!
