Are you confused about how many grams are in an ounce? Or maybe you’ve done a straight conversion – and the result wasn’t quite right? Metric conversions can be tricky to work out on the fly. This simple guide helps take the guesswork out of your next recipe by making it simple and easy to convert grams to ounces and vice versa.

A Quick Conversion Of Grams To Ounces

There are any number of quick and easy conversions you can do online, but a straightforward way to do this comes from knowing that there are 28.35 grams in one ounce (28.3495 to be exact).

When I’m working something out I always use 28.35 grams for each ounce.

So, to convert grams to ounces, you can follow this simple formula:

Weight in ounces = weight in grams / 28.3495.

Why Do Some Recipes Use Ounces Instead Of Grams?

If you’re in the US, you’re probably comfortable using the standard measurement system, which measures ingredients in pounds, ounces, cups etc.  But if you’re following a recipe created by someone outside the US, you’ll find that they provide measurements in grams, according to the metric system.

Why You Need To Know The Difference Between Grams And Ounces

When baking, measurements need to be exact, because even the slightest shortfall or excess in your conversion can mean too little or too much of an ingredient – which will affect the end result.

In the standard measuring system used in the US, volume isn’t exact because the stated volume can be affected by how tightly the ingredient is packed. For precise baking, the metric system is actually more accurate. To be completely sure, it’s always best to use a digital kitchen scale to get the best possible result when baking.

However, it’s still good to know the difference between an ounce and a gram for those quick mental conversions.

Measuring Dry Weight With Your Kitchen Scale

A kitchen scale provides the most foolproof way of getting an exact measurement. Place a container on the scale and click the ‘tare’ button to get the display to zero. Now add the dry ingredients to measure their weight. The ‘tare’ button deducts the weight of the container from the dry ingredients.
